Laser direct writing is a promising technology for creation of waveguide circuits in bulk glasses that can process optical signals in a wide range of applications. This paper describes methods for dynamic manipulation of light fields to control the structure of waveguides.

This important technology is now providing underpinning to a £3.5M EPSRC programme grant in quantum optics (EP/K034480/1).
