<22> This paper demonstrates that Particle Swarm Optimisation can be rewritten as a second order stochastic difference equation with multiplicative randomness. This shows that particle bursts, an observed but mysterious property of swarm dynamics, is explainable as an intrinsic property of multiplicative stochasticity. This result solves a long standing mystery and is the first study of multiplicative randomness in second order stochastic difference equations: this has application over a wide range of mathematical models in fields as diverse as economics and theoretical biology. For example, this work is used to estimate human posture from still images (Evolutionary Computation, 16(4), 509-528.)
