<07> This paper describes the design of the first system to exploit grids for distributed query processing. This work, funded under the EPSRC e-Science programme, had wide impact as an open source implementation had over 1,000 downloads and was used in large-scale scientific applications world-wide. As a result of this wide interest, this software was adopted, hardened, maintained and supported by the UK Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute (omii.ac.uk; contact: Steven Newhouse director@egi.eu).
