Additional information

This paper helps to resolve an issue which has been important in the problem of aerodynamic noise for decades: what exactly is meant by the noise source and can it be identified? The exact analysis that is presented gives an explicit criterion for determining which parts of a jet noise source radiate and which do not. A reviewer of the paper described the analysis as 'precise and elegant', saying that the work was 'a brilliant paper whose publication will do a lot of good'.
