This work advances channel estimation algorithms. One of the first papers to appear in an IEEE journal on channel estimation with the focus on low-complexity solutions. Novel analytical expressions are presented that allow accurate prediction of performance. The innovative relay-based channel estimation algorithms achieve close to optimal performance, while reducing computation complexity by up to 60% with respect to established approaches.
