An evaluation of acoustic reflectometry for leakage and blockage detection
Detecting and locating blockages in pipelines is an unsolved problem. This paper describes an acoustic technique for detecting blockages and other features in pipes ranging in length from 1 m to 10 km. The work is protected by two patents (US7266992 and EU EP1448970B1) and two commercial products have been developed and applied to subsea pipelines, gas distribution networks and heat exchanger tubing in Europe, the US and Asia. The technology won the IET Measurement in Action award in 2010, generated industrial/EPSRC funding in excess of £1.3M and provides an income of £100k/annum to Pipeline Engineering (contact details available).
