Additional information

This output consists of twelve, new, site-specific art works produced during Voss’s three month residency (August-October 2008) for a solo exhibition in Matt’s Gallery, London, an established internationally recognised producing gallery (http://www.mattsgallery.org/artists/voss/exhibition-1.php). The exhibition was supported by Arts Council England, the Henry Moore Foundation and Time Out.

The work centred on an exploration of the complex relationship between words - the siting of single words with double or multiple meanings - (sculptural) objects and (printed/painted) images. Assisted readymades, adapted domestic lamps in the form of figures, plants and buildings populated a specially rebuilt gallery space adorned with large-scale painted backdrops and digitally printed wallpaper of landscapes containing those single words. Internal walls were built, glazed apertures installed to provide multiple viewing points within the gallery, choreographing the viewer’s movement through the space, exploring registers of public and domestic space and creating and redoubling a sense of theatricality through the manipulation of natural and artificial light sources.

The exhibition was supported by a series of ‘In conversation’ seminars held in the gallery in conjunction with the Contemporary Arts Society, Wimbledon School of Art, Camberwell College of Arts, the Royal College of Arts, the University of Brighton and UWE, Bristol. Voss produced a portfolio, Roy Voss, 2008. Reviews of PINE included Isla Colsell, Frieze, October 2008; Laura Wilson, Artvehicle, 36, November - December 2008; Rajesh Punj, Flash Art International Edition, vol. XLI, no. 263 (2008); ‘Pick of the Week’, the Guardian 20.9.08.

Two monographs were produced to accompany the exhibition: Roy Voss (ISBN 9780907623625) and Pine, 2009 (ISBN 9780907623632). The work is also available in the public domain through websites such as http://www.contemporaryartssociety.org and www.royvoss.co.uk.
