Double-weighted statement

Each of the 5 chapters addresses a different, major literary work or tradition. The material covered spans the late eleventh to late fifteenth centuries in French (chapters 1, 2, 3), and explores the reception of French material by major Middle English poets (chapters 4, 5). Since each chapter examines a different theoretical as well as literary treatment of the ‘living death’ theme, the monograph also develops a complex thesis, summarized in the conclusion.
