A one-dimensional multicomponent two-fluid model of a reacting packed bed including mass, momentum and energy interphase transfer
Significance of output:
Hydrogen peroxide rocket propulsion is relevant due to the extreme toxicity of hydrazine but requires a catalyst to operate in a packed bed reaction chamber. This is a three phase, multi-component system with highly exothermic reactions, a significant challenge to simulate. The model developed reproduces the experimental prototype temperature and pressure profiles and is the first time a two fluid formulation of such complexity has been developed for any application. The work was funded through the EU FP7 “GRASP” project on green propellants and the paper led directly to a research job in the spacecraft propulsion industry for the student.
