Significance of output:

Many animals which swim and fly are fantastically maneuverable, able to accelerate at 10Gs or change direction 90 degrees in less than a body length at top speed. This work studies the unsteady flow on a foil which is rapidly displaced, and finds that the forces are extremely large, and the vortex wake is very complex. This study impacts the design of future super-maneuverable vehicles, and has already led to the generation of many subsequent research projects on unsteady fluid structure interaction.
