Significance of output:
One of the dominant sources of noise on a aircraft engine is the broadband nose due to the interaction of rotor-generated turbulence with the Outlet Guide Vanes. Lack of information about the turbulence prevents the accurate prediction and control of this noise source. A new method is proposed, cycle-stationary spectral analysis, to analysing turbulence data, which reveals for the first time, in unprecedented detail, this vital information. Both reviewers of this paper described it as ‘an important piece of work’ and is now being applied to the data from a number of engine rigs around Europe.
