Influence of specimen dimensions on the tensile behavior of ultrafine-grained Cu
Significance of output:
A fundamental and significant link between specimen size and tensile behaviour of ultrafine-grained (UFG) Cu was demonstrated experimentally, computationally and analytically by establishing a link between gauge length and the definition of strain. These results call for a protocol standardisation for UFG and nanostructured materials as different sample sizes lead to different mechanical properties. This is an example of the research that led to Langdon being awarded the 2012 Acta Materialia Gold Medal, presented annually to a materials scientist selected from the world-wide community and generally considered the highest award in the field of Materials Science.
