The generation method presented in this paper is the first to allow any finite collection of sets to be visualized using Euler diagrams. The generation approach aims to avoid the occurrence of certain topological properties that, since this paper’s publication, have been shown to negatively impact on user comprehension, thus demonstrating further significance not evident at the time of publication. The results in this paper have been built on by other researchers, e.g. Auber, Simonetto, and Wilkinson. The acceptance rate at Diagrams 2008 was 36%, with all papers fully reviewed by three reviewers.
