This is the revised second edition of a book first published in 2001. Chapter 9 is made up of more than 10,000 words of wholly new material analysing narrative theory in the last decade. Chapter 1 contains c. 1,000 words of new material on recent findings about the origins of narrative, while Chapter 8 contains new material amounting to more than 3,000 words on recent narrative genres; there are also new glossary entries which amount to c. 1,000 words. The full manuscript is submitted here, with tracking to demonstrate the changes from 2001 to 2013.
