Acoustic radiation force of a Bessel beam on a porous sphere
Contact-free handling of micro-scale objects is essential in many fields of science and technology,
such as bioengineering, chemical engineering and pharmaceutical sciences. Paper proposes novel
single-beam acoustic-handling technique for precise manipulation of micro-scale cells and porous
drug-delivery vehicles. Mathematical models are developed to show effectiveness of proposed
device for particles with different mechanical properties. Work led to international collaborations
including invited presentations and student/staff exchange with Federal University of Alagoas (Brazil)
[contact: Dr. Silva] and University of Southern California [contact: Prof. Shung]. Azarpeyvand also
awarded equipment funding from Royal Society (RG130310, £15k, 2013) to conduct complementary
experimental studies.
