Adaptive attenuation correction techniques for C-band polarimetric weather radars
Radar-signal attenuation due to rainfall is problem in flood-producing storms. Therefore, accurate corrections are required for quantitative use of weather radar in flood forecasting. Paper develops and assesses new algorithms for correction of attenuation at operational (C-band) frequencies. Results are applied to various extreme data-sets representing UK flood events in 2006-7, and show that adaptive attenuation-correction schemes consistently produce smaller errors compared with algorithms that use constant parameters. Work led to keynote presentation at 2013 International Workshop on Flood Risk Management (Mexico City).
