This paper combined two very recent developments: transparent soil and PIV, and accurately measured the whole-field movement within the soil due to pile installation. It opens up a variety of possibilities in physical modelling tests. It won the ICE Thomas Telford Premium Award for best geotechnical papers in 2011.
