This paper combined two very recent developments: transparent soil and PIV, and accurately measured the whole-field movement within the soil due to pile installation. It opens up a variety of possibilities in physical modelling tests. It won the ICE Thomas Telford Premium Award for best geotechnical papers in 2011. The work is followed by many research groups around the world, including: Shanghai Jiaotong University (Dr. Zhengyu Yin, zhenyu.yin@sjtu.edu.cn), Hohai University (Prof. Hanlong Liu, hliuhhu@163.com) and GeoEngineering Centre at Queen’s-RMC (Dr. W.
