Additional information

This paper looked at problems in the detection of water-filled voids, and the location and condition of steel reinforcement; issues that have troubled engineers seeking to determine the safety of older concrete structures. In subsequent collaborative work with Amey Mochel (contracted to maintain sections of elevated roadway along the M5/M6 routes), this technique showed for the first time that capacitive imaging could be used to image the size and shape of internal voids, and hence to determine possible degradation. The impact of this recently-developed technique is expected to be significant in monitoring the ageing of national road infrastructure.
