Additional information
This paper reports on a series of unique field measurements of alongshore flow velocities in the swash zone of contrasting sand and gravel beaches. The data collection was completed as part of two externally-funded, collaborative field experiments involving universities from Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand, which have been widely reported in the literature. The results indicate the importance of alongshore motions in determining the rate of sediment transport on beaches, a variable which is consistently discounted in many coastal sediment transport models.
