Additional information

Originating under EPSRC IMRC "MATCH" (EP/F063822/1) and supported by National Access Programme (Science Foundation Ireland, NAP-149), this paper highlights the advantages of integrating computational fluid dynamics, in-vitro culture and distinct multiple physical stimuli in the study of shear stress at sub-cellular scale lengths and its effect on endothelial cells. We showed conclusively that aligned cells experienced significantly lower spatial shear stress gradients compared to non-aligned cells. It was awarded the prize for best use of microscopy at UKSB 2009 and the author was invited to present this work at the University of Louisville (eric.berson@louisville.edu) in 2011.
