This extensive (pp. 648) edited collection provides a comprehensive overview of the concerns surrounding the use of colour both theoretically and in industrial and artistic applications, bringing together a range of internationally recognised authors from a variety of disciplines. The collection as a whole dealt with concerns about the lack of quality in digital technologies and was addressed primarily to professionals working in the textile and print industry. Parraman’s chapter is distinctive in focusing on the use of colour printing within the field of the creative and applied arts as it has evolved historically, but also concentrating on the contemporary impact of digital technologies, which offer alternative opportunities for creative expression that have driven both the commercial and fine art market in the development of new products, processes and hardware. The chapter provides an informative guide to these new and evolving digital technologies, as well as an understanding of traditional benchmarks and print history. It distilled a range of research that included the exploration of alternative methods for printing, the subjective qualities of ink on paper, digital printing methods and colour print in the twenty-first century.

Parraman was invited by The Colour Group (GB) to present her research into colour printing techniques at two symposia: ‘History of BLUE in Chemistry, Printing, Art, Technology and Culture’, City University, London (November 2011); and ‘New directions in colour printing in the 21st century’, Colour for Business and the Professions, City University, London (November, 2012). These events were designed specifically to meet the needs of an audience with backgrounds in printing, textile and colour management, and the presentations drew on Parraman’s cross-disciplinary knowledge of the field of print, new and emerging technologies, and their practical implications for users.
