Generating basic skills reports for low-skilled readers
<22>This paper describes how a computer natural-language generation system can summarise results of basic-skills assessment. The focus is on techniques and algorithms for generating texts which can be read by people with limited literacy skills. It is based on Williams’ PhD and subsequent post-doc at Aberdeen. Williams subsequently moved to Open University and has continued working in this area (http://mcs.open.ac.uk/sw6629/numgen). Her OU work was supported by an ESRC grant, led to a major journal paper in Computational Linguistics, and also led to the establishment of a workshop series on Predicting and improving text readability for target reader populations.
