English abstract

This article uses two examples of academic discussions on religion in mainland China that took place in the early 1980s to illustrate what happens when critique of religion is not directed against an established (orthodox) religious institution but becomes part of an orthodox doctrine itself (like Marxism) seeking a new line of orthodoxy in times of ideological change. It highlights the risks involved in this process and explains the choice of different discursive strategies by different players taking part in the discussion.
