Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society has the prestige of being the world’s first scientific journal. This publication is one contribution of 17 to a Theme Issue "A celebration of mechanics: from nano to macro". This paper is the first to report the idea of using basins of attraction for control of coexisting attractors, and is significant because it demonstrates this both theoretically and experimentally.
