Funded by the EPSRC (EP/H010262/1), this paper proposed a new fault tolerant voltage source converter (VSC). The lack of a commercial fast DC breaker, makes this work applicable to high voltage DC systems. The design has been patented (UK Patent Office, PCT/GB2012/051486,) and a 30kW prototype was built at Aberdeen University
