Step Closer
Step Closer is the outcome of practice-led research into the theme of belonging in a European context through the unreliable narration of a North American protagonist. By exploring unreliability in a story that moves contrapuntally between past and present, the research led to a novel in two timelines. It was critically praised upon publication in 2009 [“Step Closer is a brilliant examination of guilt and culpability.” (Quill and Quire)]. McWatt was invited to the International Festival of Authors to read from the book in October 2009. She was an Invited Artist at the Stratford Circus Spoken Word event on 8 October 2010 and gave a reading and book signing at Waterstone’s in Islington on 14 October 2010. The novel explores the connection between historical events and individual lives, and traces the mirroring of these events in bodies and relationships. The book explores travel of characters through space and time, and through attempts to overcome their own histories.
