The effect of contact stress on cartilage friction, deformation and wear
Significant study in terms of the threshold damage levels in cartilage reported to underpin functional tribological experimental and computational simulations of the hip. Supported by a CASE studentship (DePuy; with industry co-author; Burton aburton1@its.jnj.com ). Paper details the effects of stress on cartilage in a pin-on-plate model simulating the in vivo effects. Follow on work has developed a hip hemiarthroplasty simulation supporting the findings of the simple geometry model (Lizhang et al., JEngMed, In press) and underpins future work developing a novel whole joint in vitro simulation of the hip undertaken in the EPSRC Programme grant in Cartilage Biotribology (EP/G012172/1).
