English abstract

The article deals with Russian concepts of property, challenging the traditional historical paradigm of a Russian lack of understanding of property. Through a close reading of documents such as legislation, last wills, memoirs, philosophical and political essays, and fiction, the article describes the history of the term sobstvennost’ and related concepts, showing that different types of texts celebrated, interpreted, constructed, debated or avoided the new word. This leads to the conclusion that property should be broadly understood as a “bundle of values” rather than simply as a “bundle of rights” and a yardstick of progress.
