Religious faith in education: enemy or asset?
In aid of a constructive and healthy relationship between religious groups who seek to play a role in education and those who perceive religious faith as inimical to or undermining of education, this article shows appreciation for the perspectives of each while seeking to mediate between them - for their mutual benefit, for the sake of an enriched conceptualisation of the relationship between religious faith and education, and in service of the common good by facilitating an engaged pluralism. It rigorously exposes the assumptions that are work in the neuralgic relationship between advocates of a legitimate role for religious faith in education and those who view such faith as toxic. It offers a probing analysis of a range of ways to conceptualise links between religion, theology and education before proposing an original set of reasons for collaboration (rather than separation, isolation or hostility) between church and academy, bringing out areas of common interest between them.
