An advanced SOM algorithm applied to handover management within LTE
The 4G LTE (long-term evolution) specification includes a self-management architecture to manage the rapid expansion of picocell base-station deployments. This research uses machine learning techniques, as part of this architecture, to autonomically optimise handover between radio cells, hence reducing operational expenditure of network operators. The machine learning algorithms from this research have also found applicability, and have led to two follow-on grants addressing Light as a Service (LaaS) technology [TSB Ref: 29151-212218, £72k, 2013-15; KTP Programme £136k, 2014-16], both with the industrial partner Cisco (UK) [Gareth Macneachdainn, gmacneac@cisco.com].
