Efficient Second Harmonic Generation Through Selective Photonic Crystal-Microcavity Coupling
Nonlinear optical frequency conversion combined with photonic crystals (PhCs) technology opens a new way to generate short and coherent wavelengths in ultra-compact, ultra-fast all-optical circuits. The novel design proposed herein provides a conversion efficiency of 8.5%, a great improvement over the best literature result of 3% (Satoh, 2006). The new design can be used as building-block of a red-green-blue laser source where size, costs and complexity are reduced. In follow-on work, Letizia has used the MRTD numerical method for the design of nonlinear PhCs( IET Optoelectronics 2008), while Obayya has extended the technique for chromatic dispersion (IEEE Quantum Electronics 2011).
