Additional information

This paper, on advancing and receding contact lines on custom-micromanufactured surfaces, reported for the first time the magnitude of energy barrier required for de-pinning the contact line on these substrates. The work has application to self-cleaning and de-icing (for example in aircraft, wind power-generation, electrical power cables). This work, which was supported by EPSRC (GR/S59444/01, £97k), has influenced research groups at MIT (DoI:10.1007/s00396-012-2796-6) and Russia (DoI:10.1134/S1023193512020048).
