This paper resulted from a collaborative research project “Fault detection and fault tolerant control for automotive engines” with the BMW E30 in Munich (Automobile Control Specialist, BMW E30, 2004-2007). A senior specialist at BMW E30 commented that “due to the simplicity and reliability, the developed method is very likely to be considered in the on-board fault diagnosis and fault tolerant management research in BMW. This work has made significant contribution to air-fuel ration control of spark ignition engines” (Senior Specialist, BMW E30).
