The chief editor invited the authors to write a paper in this area having noticed the work conducted at LOOM (Chief Editor, Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment). The framework proposed has been used to effectively evaluate the risk associated with safety critical elements (Senior Surveyor, Lloyds Register). This work was generated through an RAEng fellowship of 6 months at ABS Consulting Ltd (General Manager). It was invited for presentation in the 2012 International Applied Reliability Symposium, Warsaw, 30 March 2012. It has directly led to a new PhD project (2012-2015) funded by Lloyds Register (Manager, Lloyds Register EMEA).
