Additional information

This is a ‘chicklet-lit’ text. My research into young adult literature identifies an expansion of the genre between 1997 and 2003 and on-going development. A contribution to this research defines several sub-genres including this, which to some extent resembles the commercial and popular ‘chick-lit’. However, this version of the sub-genre has a more serious side and often includes another young adult novel trait: it pushes boundaries. Scum Bag attempts to meet this definition and satisfy the commercial market. It is published by a small but commercial press and explores young female sexuality in a frank way.
