Double-weighted statement

The critical and textual apparatus in this edition (ca 65,000 words) includes an exhaustive historical collation of all earlier editions (21 in total), systematic analysis of previously overlooked typographical and bibliographical features of the editio princeps of 1633, and a sustained re-reading of the play (in light of such features) as a civic tragedy modelled on classical and humanist antecedents, and not only, as generally assumed, on Shakespeare. The introduction also grants unprecedented attention to significant North American and non-Anglophone productions, as well as to mainstream and fringe productions staged in Britain since the play's revival in the mid-twentieth century.
