Double-weighted statement

This monograph is the result of five years of research. It involved a large number of primary sources, including films available to watch only at the British Film Institute archive and archives in London, Sussex and the US. The argument generated in the book is complex. Prior to this, there had been some work on modernism and cinema (notably by Laura Marcus, David Trotter and Keith Williams) but this book was the first to establish a triangular conversation between literature, cinema and politics and to redefine the 1930s as a decade of ‘cinema-mindedness’
