PLP_1 by Juan Parra Cancino
This is an example of a performance sharing new insights on the evolving nature of live musical performance in the digital age. Performing on electric violin, the researcher collaborated with Juan Parra Cancino, composer, in giving this world premiere performance of music for electric violin and live electronics at the Sound and Music Computing (SMC) conference in Porto, July 2009.
Parra Cancino’s work, PLP_1, was conceived partly as an exploration of the nature of interpretation and musicianship in contemporary performance. Kanno's role in the collaboration was, therefore, to search for and produce input material appropriate for the conceptual framework of the piece and to develop a performance practice with the computer as an auxiliary instrument. Kanno and Parra Cancino performed two variants of PLP_1 as part of the premiere, and the portfolio that accompanies this output includes recordings of both those variants. In addition, the portfolio includes essays by the researcher and Parra Cancino that set out and contextualise some of the research imperatives, processes and key insights from this work.
