Rory Boyle: Solo Piano Music

This is an example of a reference recording, overseen and co-curated by the researcher, of original compositions sharing new insights. ‘Rory Boyle: Solo Piano Music’ is an authorised CD of works by Boyle in world premiere recordings performed by James Willshire and the Bartholdy Trio. Given Boyle’s close involvement with the performances given on this CD, he claims an authorship over them, and this output is submitted as ‘digital or visual media’, with scores available as further (rather than primary) evidence.

The release was conceived as a retrospective of the researcher’s compositional development and consequently, the majority of the works included on the disc were composed before the assessment period. The sleeve notes to the disc explain how these earlier works (such as the rigorously argued Sonata of 1991, tracks 6-8)) serve to contextualise Boyle’s most recent work, which (on this disc) includes tracks 4 and 13.
