English abstract
In this chapter, Howat explores the legacy of audio recordings of Claude Debussy as pianist, accompanying the singer Mary Garden, to demonstrate the new insights that these recordings can offer. As the researcher writes in conclusion: 'Today, we pay great attention to critical editions based on scholarly work and to historic instruments, but we often leave out the sounding evidence: deep study of this evidence pays rich dividends, for it can be an echo of Debussy's intentions, advice and tastes.'
