Detailed geometrical calculations and numerical simulations are used to extend work on the sedimentation of multiple discs (Colloids and Surfaces A, 2009, not returned) to the related case of a sedimenting ellipse, correctly predicting the experimentally-measured torque. The method has now been extended to spheres (Journal of Rheology, 2012, not returned).
