English abstract

The fantastic is an instrument of transgression to subvert the cultural codes that shape social and political reality in Latin America. Many writers have used the fantastic to challenge cultural values and political narratives. Ferré is a paradigmatic case in Puerto Rico which uses the fantastic to question women’s role in Puerto Rican society. Although obvious in her earlier writings, it is not so apparent in later works, in which there is certain nostalgia of the colonial cultural heritage. This article deals with these contradictions through analysis and comparison of the stories ‘When Women Love Men’ and ‘The Poisoned Story’.
