"Grosse Erwartungen" : Britische Subsidienzahlungen an Savoyen im 18. Jahrhundert
Subsidies are among the most widely acknowledged but largely unexplored instruments of Britain;’s rise to Great Power status in the eighteenth century. Using source materials in the National Archives and British Library (London) and in the Archivio di Stato (Turin), this article explores the developing subsidy relationship between the British and Savoyard states after 1688, and how the subsidy functioned in the war finances of both. Besides contributing to current debate about the “fiscal-military” state, the article offers a typology of subsidies for further studies of those paid and received in other conflicts in the early modern era and beyond.
