It synthesises findings from over 95 research papers selected on the basis of research quality, relevance and uniqueness from a much wider search. The algebra strand of the national curriculum is heavily dependent on this synthesis, as is a chapter in the book: Key Ideas in Teaching Mathematics 9-19, Watson, Jones and Pratt, Oxford University Press.
