Additional information

This project was the first study that empirically demonstrated that adult second language learners have difficulty with texts that include multiword phrases. Furthermore, L2 learners under-estimate the difficulty they face, suggesting they fail to even recognise a multiword phrase when it appears in text. It highlights the need to investigate phraseological vocabulary knowledge in greater detail from a range of perspectives. This study has led to the development of cross-disciplinary funded research projects (e.g., Nation, Murphy & Pullman, FELL (University)fund award 2013/14) examining the nature of collocational knowledge in children.
