Research imperatives and process: In contrast to those who consider Bruguera’s work as representative of a widespread or global ‘social turn’ in artistic practice following the so-called collapse of the ‘Second World,’ Schwartz offers a historically detailed account of the ways in which Burguera’s practice investigates the relationship between art and politics in Cuba since the 1960s. Providing a micro-history of contemporary Cuban art, the article historicizes Bruguera’s political practice, reminding scholars of contemporary art that calls for free speech and democracy are local and specific, not universal. Also available for download on Bruguera’s website (http://www.taniabruguera.com/cms), this article is part of an emerging body of scholarship on contemporary Cuban art.
