Double-weighted statement

The archival research for this 503-page 140,000 word volume was undertaken in conjunction with that for Vol. III, and largely at the same research libraries, accounting for the other 50% of my research time across a five year period. It covers over 360 disparate dictionaries and glossaries of various lengths. The contents of the longer glossaries are analysed qualitatively and statistically, particularly with reference to their use of sources and to changes in subsequent editions, to continue the first scholarly overview of cant and slang dictionaries so that it encompasses the period from WW2 to the mid 1980s.
