English abstract

The key passage on this subject is Strabo 9.14.16, which connects the idea of temple prostitution with the cult of Anahita, claiming that this was known in Persia, as well as in Media and Armenia. In the absence of any archaeological or textual record which could substantiate that claim concerning the existence of either Persian temples or the employment of female personnel, this paper investigates whether Strabo’s ‘prostitution story’ is a literary motif based on Herodotus 1.93 and 1.99, which is used as a means to depict Persia (and Armenia) in a negative light.
