This paper proposes a formal underpinning for the representation of business process based on a formal temporal model and theory. The interval based theory of time, developed by the authors over the past 20 years, allows a simplified but complete temporal representation of knowledge associated with a business process, including incomplete temporal relationships. This research has allowed the development of novel approaches for the intelligent monitoring and automated reasoning of business processes and has led to the development of the CBR-WIMS open software.
