Most of the verse included in this three-volume edition (1142pp.) has not previously been edited, and none of it has been published before with full scholarly apparatus. The endnotes, headnotes and introduction contain a monograph’s worth of original research. Most of the work on the edition was completed during a three-year British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship, although the majority of volume three was finished while Southcombe had a full teaching load. Southcombe was responsible for the production of most of the material in the edition. His research assistant compiled the textual variants and edited a group of texts in volume three.
